The quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,360.000 quarters, and for the Continent 905,000 quarters. The Atlantic" shipments were 304.000 quarters, and tfe-e Pacific shipments 250,000 quarters. January 7. Stocks and shares: Australian and New Zealand Mortgage Company debentures, £96 10s; Dalgety and Co.'s shares, £5 ss; debentures, J?9B 10s. January 8. Tallow: At the auctions 1815 casks were offered, and 590 sold. Fine mutton, 34s 3d; medium, 325. Fine beef, 33s 6d; medium, 31s 6d. , Wheat: Fourteen thousand quaiters of Australian January and February wheat sold at 41s 3d. ' January 9. The American visible supply of wheat is .£68,155,000 'bushels. January 10. Sugar: German, 9s lid; first marks, 11s 6d. The Bradford -wool market sb quieter, though all classes have firmed. Forties, 13d j forty-sixes, 14-|d; common sixties, 25|d; super., 26fd. The wheat markets are^ firm, on the strength of unfavourable weather reports ixam. Argentina, and there is % strong
statistical position. Cargoes are hardttaing. Eleven thousand quarters Sor.th Australian (January shipment) sold at 4ls 3d. Flour is firm, but quiet. Australian, 30s in store and on shipment. Freights are quiet. New Zealand is quoted at 266 3d Butter ia very firm. Danish., rules at 124s to 1265. Colonial is unchanged, but there is a strong demand, especially in secondaries, ■which are very scarce. Cheese is firm and unchanged. January 11. Linseed oil, £23 ss. Wheat: 13,000 quarters of South Australian wheat, expected to arrive in January, sold at 41s lid. New Zealand hemp: Firmer, but quiet; January and Mttrch shipment, £28. 15s. Hides: The sales were neglected., and the offering withdrawn Leather: Declined a farthing. Basils advanced a halfpenny ' Rabbits: Firm, with a prospect of an early "rise Frozen Meat. —Mutton: Canterbury light, 4d; North Island, 3Jd; best brands, 3|d; Lamb: Canterbury medium, sjjd; all other meats unchanged. Weddel and Co.'s annua 1 report on the meat trade shows that 107,572 tons of Australian meats, including rabbits, were marketed at Smithfield in 1907. forming a record. Of the total marketings 20 pei cent. was home-grown, 26 per cent. Australasian, -41 per cent. North and Soniit American, and 13 per cent. Continental. Prospects point to a possible reduction in the demand this year at Home and the Cape, but the Mediterranean, Philippine, and Eastern Siberian demand is likely to be fu-ly maintained.
