ONWARD.
The soul of man, unwearied still,
Must forward every fare. To climb the further craggy hill,
The boundless, ocean dare That breaks and booms by shores unknownt
With deep, incessant roar, And saith with solemn mqnotone:; "On! .On for evermore!" Dread mystery . through all his days Must gird him closely round, And he must fare by lonely -ways
To mystery profound; With frost and fire upon his face,
■With fierce, unsated soul, Unwearied in. the age-long race For some far, unseen goal. He holdeth. here, of Nature's hand,
A cramped and frail abode, And vainly doth, of her demand , To point the further road That he must take, but "Onward!" saitli'
The deeper voice divine, "To draw a freer, buoyant breath
Where nobler planets shine-. ■' ,_ For He -who lit thy .vital spark, i.. The dr^ad, eternal Law, ' . * Hath bade the current bear thy bark On — on for evermore! — CeAJJLEB OSCAB PaLIIES,
Kaikoura.
