INVERCARGILL D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto: "Union is Strength."

The customary, weekly meeting of the above club was held in South. British Chambers, Esk street, on the evening of Wednesday, Bth inst. Tlie meeting was presided over by Hazel, there being present of the committee Shasta, Bewa, Pakeha, Iris, Homa, Lord Wolseley, Miss Bobbie, and Midgie. Sweetheart, a visitor, was also present. The first business of the evening was the election of officers for 1908. A nofe was read from Millicent stating, that as her time ,was not her own, it would! be advisable, she thought, to withdraw her nomination for the office of president. Shasta was therefore elected president unopposed. A' letter was also read by the secretary from Casino, apologising for his absence from the meeting, and recording his votes for the respective offices. The following were nominated ior vice-presidentß : Lola, Rewa, Hazel, Lord Wolseley, David, Miss Bobbie, Homa, and Midgie. The three elected were Lola, Hazel, and Midgie, with Millicent as hon. vice-president. Miss Bobbie was elected unopposed' as secretary. Itewa- and Iris were nomin'&ted for the office of treasurer and librarian, and Rewa was le-elected. l?or the committee the nominees were Pakeha, Homa, Luceda, Bolivar, Lord! Wolseley, and Iris. The voting resulted in the election of Pakeha, Homa, Luceda, and Bolivar. This concluded the election of new officers. Hazel spoke briefly on the way in which the club had 1 advanced,' since she took the chair, at which time it had been, as it were, just wavering in the balance. In retiring, she wished Shasta, success, and thanked the members for v their help to her in the past. Homa moved a vote of -thanks to "Hazel for tho keen interest she had taken in the club, especially during her office as president. These remarks were seconded by Miss Bobbie, who referred to the excellent way in which Hazel had conducted the club. A hearty round of applause followed upon the conclusion of Miss Bobbie's speech, .Miss Bobbie also voiced the feelings of the club in extending a warm, welcome to Shasta. - Her remarks, and the applause which followed, showed that members foel we have without doubt elected the right person in the right place. Shasta very suitably responded, ana promised to do all in. her jJower for the betterment of the club. She held a firm and determined hand over the club, and in such a way as to increase her popularity among the' members. "We can look back vith pleasure and admiration upon the year's valuable service that Hazel has given tho club. Smoking Flax said a few words pertaining to the newly-elected officers. Midgie also said a few welcome, encouraging words to the newly-elected secretary, Miss Bobbie. The interclub debaiJe was then brought up for discussion. Smoking Flax explained how. he had found hintaelf unable to go at the last, through pressing engagements at work. Lola was elected to fill Smoking Flax's place, and we have no hesitation in saying that she will do so in a most satisfactory manner. The following were elected as Syllabus Committee — Shasta, Hazel, and Mddgie. The subject down for -next week is a debate, '* Save Animals Intelligence ?" Midgie leads for the affirmative and Miss Bobbie for the negative. Ttis concluded the business for the evening, and Shasta declared the club closed till Wednesday, the 15th inst.
