Help Declined.
Strange sounds came from the villa ol the Simpletons, and the neighbours and errand-boye assembled .in force to listen. It was only the lady of the house singing 1 , but none of them recognised the fact, and each had a different solution for the mystery of the extraordinary sounds. Presently a portly dame, white of apron" and pink of elbow, pushed her way through the crowd, and banged lustily on the door. There appeared a small, tired-looking old man.
" Can I be of any 'elp, Mr Simpleton?" asked the dame. "I'm the lady wot does the washin'."
"No thanks," sighed 1 Mr Simpleton. " My wife doesn't need any help when she's singing."
" Singing !" gasped the other. "There, now, some people are _ liars ! They told me that one o' the children 'ad swollereet a bird-warbler!"
