GOLD AT NELSON.
A HOAX SUSPECTED.
NELSON, January 12. f3pme excitement was caused yesterday by E report that gold had been discovered on the mudflat along the water front. It appears 'that some corporation labourers •who were laying the outfall eewage main found traces of gold in the excavations. They temporarily abandoned their _ work, and made several " wash-ups," with encouraging results. The news quickly e'hread, and the discoverers were soon joined ly several others. During the day the Commissioner of Crown lands issued licenses for one qr two claims, which were duly pegged out, the holder of one of the largest ,€eing a neighbouring M.P.
