TOURISTS IN AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, January 11. § That the Auckland district with its manifold beauties ia rapidly becoming oce- of the chief tourists resorts of the Dominion has been well demonstrated during the past holiday season, as ever since the middle • of last month the majority of the local hotels and boarding-houses have been filled to overflowing, and though all kinds of makeshifts have been resorted to hundreds of visitora have had to be turned away to seek accommodation elsewhere. At one hotel so great has been the demand that the licensee has been obliged to hire rooms in many of the neighbouring boardinghouse to put up his guests. "Notwithstanding this, he has, during the past .month, been compelled to turn away between 200 and 300 people. At another "hotel the Licensee, his wife, and the servants have had to give up their rooms to clamouring guests, while at a third numerous "shakedowns >r have had to be provided. The same- lack of accommodation also prevails in regard to other hotels ,and boardinghouses. No fewer than 30 intending guests were turned away from one of the large boarding-houses" on Sunday last. AH the rooms, at the leading establishments have been looked- for several ''weeks .ahead.. It, is expected" that there will continue to "be i steady influx of visitors until after Easter.
