SERIOUS RAILWA Y ACCIDENT.
TRAIN SMASHES A 'BUS. TWO PASSENGERS INJURED. AUCKLAND, January 13.^ A serious accident occurred on the. XaS para railway at the Maimkau roa>d <ew>ssmf at Avondalß shortly after -nodn to-day. A 'bus proceeding • from Awndale to town was negotiating the crossing Tirhen the tip< country goods train, wbich had just left the Avondale station, crashed into the back of the vehicle, smashing it. to pieces. The horses were just clear of the engine and, breaking loose, escaped eca^hless. There -were -only two passengers besides the driver (H. JFairar) on the 'bus— namely, Mr Win. Sheppard {school teacher, of jßahiatua) and Mr Thomas - Horton (nurseryman, of the same place). The train was stopped immediately and the engine returned to Mount Eden Station, where the ambulance was in waiting toj convey the injured men to the hospital,,' and Dx CaroJan accompanied the men to ! town. Farrar states that he could easily have got over the crossing -had not one of the other passengers, becoming excited, seized the Teins and so pulled the horses up. IT-arras: was found by -Dr Carolan to hay©' sustained an injury to the arms. Mr Sheppard received <a scalp wound and a terrible gash in the hip, accompanied, it_ is fear-ed, by internal injuries. Mr Horton has also a bad 6calp ' wound. Mr Horton is a member of the Eahiatua Bowling Club team . -at pi'esent visiting: Auckland, and Sheppard is a. native ol New South Wales,
