LONDON, January 10. The Board of Trade's >Advisory Committee, basing its conclusions chiefly on Mt R. J. Jeffray'fi report, states that it is , a 6erious mistake to underestimate the .extent of foreign competition in New Zealand or its possible expansion. " Al* though British manufacturers may contem' plate the present position -with some satisfaction they cannot afford to relax theii vigilance or be lulled into a feeling ol security T>y the preferential tariff. Tha United Kingdom might supply a few classes of goods at present almost 1^ held by foreign- tradersj but excepting certain American, French, German, and Belgian specialties, most other foreign goods aie cheap lines which British manufacturers considered unimportant. Tha committee considers that, with reasonable vigilance and attention to the desires and! prejudices of consumers, British traders should maintain, and even Improve, their position.
