LONDON, December 30. The Standard asks editorially how far " those who cheered Mr. Smellie's remarks on Socialism represent the general body of the Scottish miners on a clear issue of Socialism v. Individualism. Ac regards j Westphalia as a field for Socialistic labour, j the paper points , out that Germany has reserved it entirely for the Germans. British trade unionists are practical men, and readier, to- take practical remedies for the" ills from which- they suffer than follow " theorists." It advises them to dtudy the progress that the German worker has made since Bismarck abolished free importe into the Empire. Mr Curran, M.P., speaking at a Socialist "demonstration at Bristol, saioT that the country's prosperity was represented to b© rising, but the degradation of-, the- worfanen continued. No remedy for the present want of employment had been suggested, while the unscrupulouslaw of _competition was the guiding principle of commerce. --- ■ ___ I
