The forty-sixth annual sports v gathering of the Caledonian Society of Otago was commenced on the Caledonian Ground,, which was_ in- first-class order, on Wednesday, w hen" there.- was a large .attendance of /the -public, the takings being- £10 19s 6d ah excess of those ior the faret day last ; year. - The approximate "^attendance- -was 5500, and the^ taking at the gate £202 Is. IhMiie 2ndj.wlieD_ the sports were continued, Jthe attendance was only about '500 less, and »he gate' money reached £132 9s 6d, which JP *28 10s 6d more than last year, so that Idiere is a financial, advance on the two nays of some £40. The sporte themselves ■were carried out in fch« usual excellent tnanner, punctuality being a noticable feature. There was quite ai} army of ■ssfetants, and' everything* 'w«ni, lifee- clockwork. every .faoility\ was afforded 1»y all "oi the officials to the press representatives in. gathering necessary informaItion, their thanks are specially due to Mr iW. E; C. Reid,, who aot'ed as press steward. Mir Reid_, throughout the sports, was mpet Unremitting in his efforts to render" assistanoe. The same . familiar faces were to b« ■met with among ihe officials, with two or' [three exceptions. Mr Blaney, Mr Wedderspoon, and, fluite recently, Mr Simon._MrDonaJd have niedi and their deaths must.i.roye a Joss to the Caledonian Society of Otago, of which Jihey -were very % old and; valued members. The exits were frequently blocked, and there was resulting delay in getting out j&t the gates. The various events provided 1 two very 'interesting afternoons- -«porti and' ; as many of the finals were necessarily kept' back till th* second day, yesterday's proaramme proved exceptionally interesting. 'The society was fortunate in meeting with very fine weather on both days, though' the^ high wind that blew from the north-east-yesterday interfered to some extent with cycling and' running events. Following are the restdte of the sports for the two days:— ' ONE-MILE HANDICAP. Prizes: £7, £3, and £2. - R. Chalmers, 65yds . — 1 A. Couling, scr .. . < -. 2 5 A. ' , .-• Harris dropped out at the eria of ''two taps and Small when he had gone about three lap's. In "the last lap the field waa pretty well bunched, and in a, fast finish Chalmers won by about 4yds, the scratch man being olose on him all the way in the straight. Valentine was about 6yds away from the second man at the finish. The time (4min 28 l-ssec) is exceptionally fast for the Caledonian Ground, and is the best record mad» in the sports dwring the past 16 years. HALF - MILE BICYCLE HANDICAP. Prizes: £2 15s, £1 15s, and £1. ' First lieat: 3' t Walquist, 30yds, 1; A. Wilson, Bsyds, 2; C. F. Smith, acr, 3. The other starters were: J. E. Tall 10yds, A. Brown--20yds, and J. B. Westwood 50yds. At the - end of the first lap_ Walquist had nearly caught Wilson (the -limit man), and/ passing him aoon after, won by about Byds, Smith being on Wilson's wheel. Time, lmin 6 1-Ssec. Second heat: W.. G. Goodall, 60yds, 1; H. Withey, 35yds. 2; M. Idour, 80yds, 3. AI3O competed: L. Maw 35yds, W. Christie 45yds, and H. M. Christie 50y_ds. At the halfdistance the three placed men were cloae together, Idour being in the lead. He was, however, supplanted by Goodall, who won. by about 3yds, "Withey finishing almost abreast of Idour. Fleming 100 yds. i With half a-mile covered Buchan was well out by himself, the rest being bunched. In j the straight the scratch man made a fine apurt, but failed to catch Buchan, who had a lead of about 4yds on breasting the tape. The walking by one of the competitors, outside the three r>!aced men, was open, to question. Time, 6min 46se»

Both men jumped w*ll, but Park kept in front all through, and won -comfortably by four yards. Time, 19 4-ssec. .Second heat: A. Bennet, 4yds behind, 1; C. W. Bowie, lyd behind, 2. The men took their jumps together over the greater part of the distance, but at the last hurdle* Bowie wa« unlucky enough to fall, and lost any chance he had. Time. 20 3-ssec. Those qualified for the final were Park, Egan, and Bennet, Egan participating owing to hia heat being run in faster time than the second one. Final. A. Bennet, 4yd» behind 1 A. Park, Bcratch 1 £. Egan, 3yds behind 3 3annet assumed the lead early in the race, and, jumping well, just managed to last out, successfully staving off Park's challenge at 'the finish, and winning by a few inches.
