ANOTHER HUNT ORGANISED.

After the last offenoe, Commissioner ' Dinnie deoided that it wa« once more time to take active aUfens in the direction of ending the fugitive's care«9^ and with a view of taking advantage of the dry weather, once more sent Detective Broberg from. Wellington to take up the search. Constable A". Skinner, the wellknown wrestler and instructor in the Wellington police physical culture school, was sent with ißroberg. and on the 7th ult. they arrived at Gisborne, where they learnt that on November 16 another robbery, had been committed at Mr Honin's surveyor* camp at the back of Hutchinson's station, ] in the wilds of the Tahora. , - 1 In Gieborne the police engaged a man named Harry Green, who had worked <for , a number of years witb surveyors in the Tahora district and the country aouth of it. He could speak the Maori language, j and was well versed in> their ways of living . in general. OntDecember ll Detective • Bro- 1 berg and his two mates left Gisborne by , conveyance, and that night arrived at ' Wharekopai. Next day they packed their i camp, gear, provisions, etc., to Hutohinson'* station, ' and on the following day went into the back country and fixed their camp, , Subsequently they found a Matenga camp 6ome distance from where Honiri's whare had formerly been. In consequence of having made arrangements with the way- , back station* to be informed of any camp thefts, they, on Sunday, December- 15, heard, a Tumour to the effect that some weeks previously a strange Maori had called in at a pa some miles away over the busholad ranges. TKe' J party,"mftde preparations for an early start on the Monday morning, with thejr swags, consisting of a tent, fly, I rugs, wateTsheets, change of underclothing, i and. a four-days' supply of boiled bacon, ; bread, tea, and sugar. TRYING WORK. Leaving this place they crossed Tahora Station, and made for the bush-enveloped stream known as the Motuwera. Finding the 1 banks of the river too thickly^ clad with uaderacciih. that took to the river itself, {

and, clad in their underclothing and boots, with their swags and tucker on their backs, I they waded with the stream for miles. In most places the bottom was very rough, j ! and it was a case of jumping and scramb- j ling from rock to rock. Places too deep i were avoided by occasionally taking to the ] bush. After a time the party were sur- j prised to find trades,' which, on being allowed up, led to a rough and deserted camp a few yards from the river. It was evidently a one-night camp, and some feathers lying about showed that the bush-dweller, had fed on blue mountain duck, which are very plentiful in the diffeeirnt rivers inthat part of the country. The hunters continued down the stream until they came to the Hungaroa River. Near its junction with the Motuwera the party found another camp similar to the one already described, and were, notwithstanding the rough travelling, feeling on fairly good terms with i. themselves.
