TALK OF THE DAY

THE DUNKDTN CUP MEETING. Although the Dunedin Jockey Dlub'a summer meeting has only recently been, converted into history, the shadows of the Dunedin Cup meeting, which forms our principal gathering of the season, are already upon us in the shape of 'the programme for our ' three days' fixture. Al'A 1 ' time tbere- was when the_ Dune3jn Cup - stood second to none in importance-, but • fluctuating:! fortunes and jhe changes that occur i^. a young -country caused it to los£ " some'of its former prestiger Now,- however, it is pieasing to be able to say -it is re- ; gaining its popularity, and with a continuance of the success which has latterly 1 : been attending the efforts of the Dunedin Jockey Club to cater for horse-owners and! T the sporting public it should soon take a much higher rank both from a, financial! and sporting point of view than it occupies at present. This year the stake is 400sovs,, and that' sum should induce a good few owners to give some of their horses a run in a valuable and time-honoured race. The programme for the Dunedin Cup meeting shows a fairly liberal increase on tho amount of prize-money which was given away at last season's fixture. In addit-'on-I- to the Dunedin - Cup there- is the ChamI pagne Stakes, of 250soVs ; the Publicara*Handicap, of 200sovs ; the D. J.jD- Handicap, ! of 25050V6; the Anniversary .Handicap, of 175sovs ; whilst each of the ' hurdje races are worth lOOsovs each, the hack events are. all worth, the same amount, and no raca' on the programme has - prize-money of lesa than lOOsgvs attarhed to it, except the Trial Plate. Owners should bear in mind tha<? the nominations for the principal eventsare due on the 14th of tn© present month.
