FIRST MOTOR BOAT IN U. S. NAVY

An American correspondent forwards particulars of the first motor boat supplied to the United States navy. She is carried' by tlffe battleship Connecticut, and is 40ft long, with a beam of 4ft 6in. The boat is engined with a Brownell-Trebert fourcylindter motor of the four-cycle type, giving 6, spee^d of 19.7 knots an hour. The bore of the engine is 6jin, and the stroke 6in, developing 75 h.p. at 900 revolutions per minute. Juet aft of the engine room is a gasoline tank of a Capacity oi UOgal. Oounter-oalanoe slings are attached for hoisting, with hooks aft,- amidships and forward, and side hooks amidships. • There are- individual canopies for the stern sheets, engine room, and cockpit, and a speaking tube frqm the stern gheeto to the cookpit for the transmission of orders to tne pilot. The boat is manned by a crew consisting of coxswain; engineer, machinist, and ordinary seaman.
