WAIKOUAITI.
I January 6. — As is usual at this time of tha I year, a great many visitors are staying itf j -Waikouadti. - AH -the boarding houses and many private houses ,are^ full to overflowingyand the. main street on Christmas and New Year Eves presented" a very lively appearance. Perfect suxamei weather has- prevailed' during the last few weeks, and d'aily'large nuxn!j bers- have been, attracted to the beach, where sea-bathing . has, been' freely indulged, in, and , the children- have- wadei to their hearts' I sontent; Hi© shopkeepers report that busi-
Sees has been very good, and their only regret is tiuvt the holiday season is so short. Bowling Club. — On the, Ist of January an entertaintnett under the auspices of the W«ikouaiti Bowling Club was given in the - Public Hall. The wedl-known comedian, Mr .Barrie Marschel, was engaged for the-evenirife, - «nd a very good and amusing programme was presented by him and his conipeny. It is gratifying to report that, after all expenses " rwere paid, a* credit balance tfemained, and \ ihat the club's funds will benefit to some " extent. The bowling ipreen is not being improved by the bright, sunny weather that _ we have enjoyed. It is getting hard on the . surface, and bumpy, but in spite of defects , » considerable number of young but enthu- . sias-tic players can be seen every evening - on the green, and some marvellous shots are . - ocasionally -played. The gamo— which 'is Ttndbuibtedly a very fine one — is "taking on" - mV W&ikou-aiti, and it is hoped that on the opening day (the 15th inst.) the club will -" lave a. membership of- well over 30. • -■ The ordinary -monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on the 3uth ult., , the -Mayor and seven councillors being present. Amongst the correspondence was a letter from the Minister of Railways declining to fill in the borrow pits near the railway station. It is much sto be 'regretted. that these unsightly and evil-smelling holes - are allowed to remain and the residents of "- Hhe borough-have a genuine grievance against • -the Government, as the pits were caused by the formation of the railway.
