RIFLE SHOOTING OTAGO RIFLE ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL 'PRIZE-FIRING.
President, Lieutenant-colonel Smyth; vicepresidents — Ldeutenant-colonel SmfcS, V.D., Lieutenant-colonel Allen, Lieutenant-colonel Stoneham, Lieutenant-colonel Myers, and Major Hislop; hon. treasurer, Lieutenant Laoey;- hon. secretary, Lieutenant Ml/can; council, one member from each corps or rifle -alub. affiliated. JThe thirty-fieventh annual prize-firing of the Otago Rifle^ Association was commenced at the Pelichet Bay range on Wednesday morning at a quarter past 8, and came, to- a termination at a late hour on the 2nd. This year's meeting may be considered easily the most successful yet "held. The entries totalled 122, as against 108 for the previous year, and 97 the year before. Of the individual^ towns which sent representatives, Dunedin was most largely .represented, but Ohristchurch, Timaru, Waimate, Oamaru and Invercargill all sent 'men; competitors being present from -Christchurch to the Bluff. Such a decided increase in the number of entries must be considered highly gratifyinjr, for it goes jo show that the association's annual firmg 1 contest is improving in general popularity. As to weather ' conditions prevailing over the two daye, they, were not what might '• have been desired. On -the Erst day there j was a light fisk-tail "wind, which, of course, ' interfered with shooting. On the 2nd matters- were very much worse. In fact the day was one of the worst the association has experienced from an actual shooting v point of view. While fine overhead, ■an exceedingly heavy, choppy wind vailed over tile greater part of the day; J and interfered with matters considerably. Nevertheless, the shooting was ire some instances decidedly good. This was'especially so on the first day, when three possible --scores were recorded, those responsible being - Sapper Parker (Dunedin Engineers), at 'the 200 yds distance,,, Private Dippie at '500 yds, and- Private Duncan, also at 500. Yesterday .the- best individual • score- was that of Trooper Neill (Otago Hussars) who recorded 34 at the 50.0 yds distance. Among those taking part «in the contests were Obi. Smith, a past rifle champion, and'exchampion of New Zealand; also Sergt. Mills and Corp. Ayson, both of whom wer& members of the last New Zealand rifle team that visited Australia. Natur- v ally, the carrying out of "the contest entailed a good deal of hard work on those who were responsible for its management. In. that connection special praise is due to the lion, secretary (Lieut. W. E. 'M'Lean), who had an exceedingly heavy task allotted him. To Mir M'Lean our representative was also greatly indebted for willingness in supplying information. Among the* other hard workers was Captain Proudfoot, who undertook the duties of geieral' supervisor, and. did a- lot to .make the contest a success; Captain M'Ara, Lieutenant Lacy, and Lieutenant Willoughby. On the first day and yesterdajr there was a fairly ■good ■ gathering- of interested" spectators. ' On each t o£ the two days it was late in the evening before firing , was suspended. In order to complete the programme in the two days it was found necessary to delete one "event— namely, No. 4- event, Service , Match, 300 yds. Last evening it was about | a quarter past 8 before firing was con- 1 eluded. The light by that time was . gradually fading, and when the last shot j was dred there was just sufficient light to .' take , anything like " proper aim and no , more. The concluding events saw two possibles added , to the previous three registered. These were recorded -by Trooper P. Ayson,. Murihiku, in the Otago Match at 600 yds, and by Sergeant Bradley, Dunedin. in the Last Try Match at 500ydfe. At the close •of the firing Lieutenantcolonel Smyth, in speaking to the. competitors, referred to the smoothness, with which the meeting had been conducted and the lack of friction which characterised it. No hitch had occurred throughout the two days, and for this credit 1 , was due to the officials, especially to Lieutenant M Lean, the hon. secretary, also Captain Proudfoofc ' He also drew 'attention to the increased number of young men who had taken part ' in the meetings some of them being only lads.. He calfed for cheers for the officials and range officers (Captain M'Ara. Lieutenants Lacey'and Willoughby). Captain Wain, on Jtfehalf- of the visiting oompeti- r tors, thanked the officials for the- successful | manner in which the meeting had been , <jontrolled'. , . . . , The fact of "no hit" being registered led many of the competitors both yesterday and the previous day to take advantage or the privilege -accorded them of challenging the marker's statement, the challenge ibwng aocompanied by the payment o£ half a , crown. In close on 30 cases, yesterday, however, the challengers had to forfeit their money, and* the association thus benefited to a slight extent in this respect. The results of and prizes allotted in. the various- matches are as follows:— HAIiENSTEI^r MATCH. 200 and 600 yaids. Seven shots and two optional sighters at each range, i * ' 200 600 yds. yds. Tl.
