The race and dam are completed, and Mr David will have the whole of the season before him to reap the well deserved reward for his enterprise. At Macetown Mr Lenthall has washed 1440z of gold from the recently recovered lead for the last month, and the ground ahead looks as well as what has been taken out. (From a Correspondent.) Queenstown, September 29. The result of the four weeks' crushing of the Invincible Quartz Mining Company is 190oz 18dwts smelted gold from 294 tons of quartz crushed. We (Tapanui Courier) were shown a splendid sample of gold by Mr Alex. Officer, of Kelso, last week. The quantity was about two ounces, one piece alone turning the scale at five pennyweights. The gold, which was obtained iv tho vicinity of of Leithen gorge, was all coarse, and some specks had quartz adhering to them. There are abou<flso men at work in this locality. An offer was made a few days ago (bays the Tuapeka Times) by the Gabriels Tailings Company to the Otago Company to purchase their ground, but as the sum offered (£2800) was not up to the mark, the offer was not entertained. Half-a-ton of stone from Mount Lyell, Tasmania, sent to Melbourne, yielded 15ozs to the ton. The pyrites were to be sent to Ballarat for treatment, and were not included in the yield. A Press Association message from Hokitika states that Wednesday's returns from the Ross Goldmining Company gave 19oz 15dwts. | The Dunedin Gold Dredging Company pay a dividend of £l per share to shareholders after Friday.
At a meeting of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club Conmrttee held on Wednesday night, it was decided to hold a sports meeting on the Caledonian grounds on Saturday, 6th November. The programme of events, which includes a gymnastic competition, will be announced in a few days. The Caledonian Society's championship wrestling belt has been awarded to Harry Dunn, William Hudson, who won it at the sports last New Year, having failed to comply with Dunn's challenge. The latter is now declared to be the champion wrestler of New Zealand. Hudson appears to try and ignore the challenge, as he has arranged a match, which is said to be for the championship, with Matthews, the pugilist.
