PROGIiESS 01' WORKS. TllliJ.i; SHIFTS O.N DAM. (From "Shannon .News.": Work is steadily progressing with the construction oJ 'he Arapeti dam. The concrete is now up above Bhe limning across i«he small creek. The wurk is being speeded up and during last week Jilty new men have been put on. No new work ha, been opened up, all haJids being concentrated on the dam. three shuts now being engaged. A new quarry ha.- been opened Up ! above the dam. towards Hie Tokoma; ti Valley, where' a, plentiful supply oi stone is iiow being obtained The compressor has now ceased work owing to work in the tunnels being completed. Recently a large number ol tents have been erected at Arapeii to house the additional men. Building is still going on and tents cannot be erected last enough. \i the Top Camp, MangahuO, a con--6 crete coffer dam about iu leet high, I and some three chains Irom the big idam, has been built to protect the work while the diver i= working at liic loundation ol the dam proper. j Although several floods have been experienced recently they have not seriously held up the work which has been protected In the '.offer dam. ; i'he. excavating is finished and a stun win be made at, once with the concreting. I'lepaiations are well advanced and ■■■ concrete- mixer has been erected on the side ol the valley, which will shortly be ready to shoot i the concrete down into '.he dam. A start has been made with the ! survev o! No. 1 storage dam at Man- | gahau by Mr A. Hudson. This will j be the largest dam o: all, its holding capacity being 650,000,000 gallons, while Maiigahao No. 1 is SOUkOOO.OOO arid Arapeti 350,000,000. Every effort is being made to be in a position to ielea.se some power j by June, but the scheme will not be completed until later. The work of concreting the Arapeti dam. 'has entailed a lot of carpenter- '. ing. involving the election of a large amount of staging for the trucks to run over, which of course means a net-work oi scaffolding, the scene at the dam being a very animated one. Mr Hinton, who for some time has been overseer at the Arapeii dam, has left lor Auckland. He has been .succeeded by Mr .1. Jordan, late of the Wairoa-AVaikokopu railway construction works. Mr (Millar, bite of Mangaore, is . now foreman at Arapeti. Mr Rogers i having gone to Inglewood. i
