THE CARNIVAL FUNDS.

SECTIONS FURTHER DISCUSSED. THE MAYOR SAYS ‘ ‘ COUNCIL Not PLAYING THE GAME. ’ ’ At yesterday’s meeting of the Ota 1 - Borough Council the following lette was read: — IVe have pleasure to forward herewith cheque for £‘UiS, which represent, the net proceeds of the late queen earni. val. The committee of the carnival desire us to point out that it is their wish that the money be expenuJU on '• the improvement and beautifyiiw ulthe domain within its present hound, aries. The committee has gone to some ’ trouble to ascertain the wishes of t ].„ various sports’ bodies and would be glad if the Council will expend the money so far as such is practicable, in the direction authorised in their | ([ ' ter tojyou of 13th September last Assuring you of the committee’) willingness to assist, the Council in having the domain made a credit to tK; town and to provide for all classes of sports.—We are, dear Sir, yours faithfully, J. P. BRANIDON, Chairman ' H. WITCH ELL, Treasure^’ The Mayor moved that a letter be sent to the Carnival Committee thanking them for the money and advisin» them that the Council would carry out the Committee’s resolution of September 13th as far as practicable. He pointed out when the matter of croquet laws was discussed there was no offer of sections and even at public meeting it was never suggested that the domain be increased in size. The money raised was for improving and beautifying the domain, and the Carnival Committee sent* forward a resolution as to hon the money should be spent. The Committee had no desire to dictate to the Council. He had also gone to the trouble, he added, of finding out the wishes of the various sports' bodies, and almost without exception all were anxious for the money to he spent *n the domain. The Council had passed a I resolution to purchase the section, and could do so if an Order-in-Council was passed, but lie hoped that the Council would do the right thing and carry out the wishes of the Committee. He did not desire to see tjic Council break faith with those who had raised the money Cr. Taylor, in seconding, said the whole trouble was through a misunderstanding. Had the Carnival Committee put its view plainly-there would have been no trouble. Cr. Kilmister said he would net change his views till he saw the resolution in the Carnival Committee’s

books/ The Mayor said he showed it to Cl Cockrell. Cr. Cockrell considered a lot hinged on what was' improvement to the domain. Cr. Kilsby pointed out that judging by the Engineer’s plans there was is, room on the domain for all sports, anJ he therefore favoured securing the additional land. If the football urea to interfered with by a cricket pitch thf ground would be spoiled and football would be driven to Levin where theft were already good fields. He did tut care whether the sections were hough out of the present funds or by a special loan, but it was certainly his wish tin they be secured and thus enlarge tit domain. The Mayor stated he would not lib, it said that the funds had been diverted. Cr. Kilsby: Me cannot make the present domain a good one unless the Mttionx are 'purchased. I think tin should be bought out of carnival furdt Cr. Cockrell said the natural thing was to buy the sections, and considered they should be secured by carnival money. If an attempt was made t* ruisc more money to buy the land then would b'e a bigger howl than at presell He felt sure large numbers were a favour of buying the sections. The Mayor said the jettons never even been offered by the owners further there were insufficient fundsß buy, even if desired.

Thu motion on being put was lost only the Mayor and Or. Taylor beinf in favour of the wishes of the qaeetcarnival being carried out. The Mayor said he was extren>-( sorry the Council had arrived at sctl a decision. He’did not think the Copt ei) was playing the game by de c iriq to utilise the money for buying tions.

Cr. Kilmister suggested that ft. Kilsbv and the Town Clerk a net tain ivhat the actions could be hoop for and report at next meeting.' Agreed to.
