in reply to a remit sunt from the Dominion Conference re farmers buy- j ing old tarpaulins from the Railway j Department the General Manager of liailways writes '.,. rhe Dominion Secretary thus:- -In connection with the side of condemned tarpaulins to farm- 1 ei's. I have the honour to hi form you that you are entirely wrong in assuming- that a great waste occurs in deal ing with unserviceable tarpaulins. There is no wast, —such covers »s are damaged fir worn in places are either repaired or utilised to the fullest extent in repairing others. The portions not so utilised are quite unsound and unfit for covering purposes. For these reasons there are no tarpaulins in the Department's hands which would answer the purpose, you have in view-. The matter is one- which has been given consideration on many occasions : but in view of the difficulties which ! would inevitably arise if covers were ! again sold it is regretted the request I made by the conference cannot be ,-om- ' plied with,
