SUMMER PASTIMES.
- Many are inclined to think that we pay too much attention to sport and recreation nowadays. However, without debating this point, on which there is much to be *ui?l both for and against, there can be no doubt that our pastimes play an important part in our everyday lives. The football season is now almost over, and will end shortly. The golf club will also shortly conclude a very successful season, while other winter pastimes have almost ended for the time being. Attention is now being devoted to summer pastimes, which will soon be in full swing. The Bowling Club, which is well -managed and popular with all classes, will no doubt have a most successful season. Quite a number of new members are joining up this year, and the club expects to have a big membership. Croquet is rapidily gaining in popularity, and two clubs may be in full swing before the season is over. A deal depends cm the Carnival Executive. Tennis, which is now, perhaps, the most popular summer pastime throughout the whole world, will claim more devotees than ever this coining season. It is pleasing to know that nearly every little settlement in the district now has its tennis court, which provides excellent scope for pastime by those whose distance from the towns has in the past prevented their participation in any such games. Unfortunately. the national game of old England, cricket, languishes in this district. Despite the efforts of a l'ew enthusiasts, it is always a "difficult matter to secure full teams for matches. Possibly there may be an improvement in this direction this coming summer. IVe hope so, but experience of the past few years does not tend to make one too optimistic. Une of the most healthy and popular of all summ'er pastimes is swimming. Otaki possesses unique opportunities for indulgence in summer parities. It is a very paradise for those who have plenty of time to devote to recreation and enjoyment, and presents numerous attractions for visitors in search of health and amusement. We do well to take full interest in our pastimes, for the strong, healthy body leads to a happy and contented mind, and enables one to give of his best in his work and mission in life.
