Anderson I reported : , “Since my last report work through- j out the County has been carried out ; in a very satisfactory manner. I “In die Tohoinarn Riding 1 have practically nothing to report on. In the southern end metalling was completed ill the end of lost week: most uf the roads were repatched and a number of dumps put out. In the northern part of the Riding, metalling has been delayed owing io the

contraAior failing to commence n»s contract. This contract is now under way and by next meeting the roads should be in good order. “Wirokino Riding: The main '.vrk in thi= riding has been practically nil routine work. Tne men have been mostly engaged in cleaning watertables. attending to culverts, etc. The new Kawiu-Foxton road has been reformed and is now in readiness for metalling. As a _ £3OO Government grant exists for this road, application will shortly be made for this money and the w : ork put in hand. A new pipe culvert, was put in at ihe intersection of the main south and Knku 1 roads. Tenders were colled during ' the month for maintenance metal for the roads in the southern end of this riding and the tender of Mr K. Easton, of Foxton. was accepted at ~ very satisfactory price.—The contractor will start work on Monday. ‘•Re Messrs Carry and Jack’s request to have a -certain road through section 53- Heather]ea Settlement, dedicated as a. public road: t have visiter] Hi is proposed rp<ari ft tin Htei making inquiries regarding the matter find there is still no access from ihe present road to the proposed road. The Council therefore cannot accept dedication. “Tn connection with Mr Edward Newman’s request to have something done to road leading from Waitarere road to his properly near the coast : The councillors for the riding anu nix-self visited the locality during the period. Since the visit 1 have gone into the matter and find that no public road exists, only a right-of-access between Sections 2 and 3. Heatherlea Estate. I therefore do not consider the County has power to spend monev on private property. ! '■ “Regarding Waiterere road.—A Government grant of £SOO, £ —. I ims been granted for this road, uiit ! as the estimated cost to the first gate ! 'aivoioxnuately one mile and threequarters) is £1(00. ways and means will have to he found to take up this ii-nnt ' I would suggest that a rn&etjfnrr Of ail the settlers concerned be I held to KU’sctiJs the raising of the | I balance of the money- _ i “Aratangatn road; This-.road branches from the Kaputaroa-Foxion road land runs iq the Manawatu tiver. ' narahcl to the Aratangata dram, through swamnv country. I estimaH the cost ° f forming OT fl metalling a ! qG+iw-o of too ebflins at £2500. t “Damage to Tnrarua road f-uunn? vno month I interviewed Mr KnightDannevirkP. regarding damage « ' above ro a( i and he has promised that

la start will be made with repairs to |my satisfaction within the next tew | days, i have therefore withheld claim I tor the time being-. l “The crushing plant hns been set up in tlie Bartholomew road pit and arrangements made lor power to diivc same. I hope to have crusher in tun swing within the next dav or two

Ctaki Riding. } little work lias been done in tilts Riding (excepting surfacing work) 1 ' tin- period, but a contractor has been at woi k carting boulders in readiness for crushing operations, which I expect to start on Monday next. All the load plant is now in this Riding, the new elevators arrived from Auckland yesterday afternoon after being on the rail journey for JU to 12 days, the surveys ot Bevan and luge’s Road and \\ aikawa Beach Road have been completed and specifications prepared for same, so that an early start can he made with both " oriis when tlie money is available. A new 24 inch concrete pipe culvert was put iu oil Freeman’s Rotid.

Te Horo Riding. The roads in this Riding are in fair older, particularly the main roads—thanks to the heavy motor trafiic being off for the last month or two. A goou deal ol metal is required on certain roads, but 1 consider it would be un"i»u io do too much patching before the toad plant comes into the district as it would not pay start crushing unless a lair amount oi metal is required as the shifting cost i-s too great. In company with Councillor Jensen 1 visited the Otaki Gorge Road and loutnl same to be in a pretty bad state in places, but a satisfactory arraugeanyit was made "ith Mr. Corrigan to metal the worst parts. COUNCILLORS’ COMMENTS.

Cr. Whyte reported tlie metalling ui ms ruling was progressing satisiactoiily, wniiii cr. Barber considered

Mr Letiibridge was desirous ol tapping his springs. Cr. Jensen asked would there be suflicieiit water to make the scheme ol any use. Tile Engineer said he did not have much faith in the scheme and was afraid there would be a lot of leakage. He did not feel inclined to waste lime on the matter. Cr. Jensen said many settlers were anxious to get the water, and he proposed that the ratepayers be call i‘ii together to liis-uss Mir proposal, lie also stated • there was a shorage of water in die present races and that there bad been many complaints, lie thought there must be some seri-

ous blockage, or that someone was interfering vidi the races.. Surfacemen. be maintained, should not be allowed to attend the Gear races as thorp was no maintenance rate. Tlie ranger 'Mr G. Wats*n) reported that, during the month he had impounded 35 head of stock, but owing to sboitage ot feed tile roads needed a ini: of attention. Gr. Broadbelt complained of sto« - k on tlie Arapaepne rood am! thought the ranger should be requested to pay mure attention to it. The chairman considered the ranger very tactful, and that he had received very little support from Magistrates. who inflicted paltry fines. It. was decided to write to the ranger risking him to be more active in some ridings.
