A HYGIENIC FASHION.
Since women adopted the custom of going with the neck and upper part of the chest bare there are fewer ihroat and clrcst troubles among them, while the high collar and, in winter, the muffler an<l closely buttoned overcoat of men make them more susceptible to such diseases. From a standpoint (says “Popular Science Sittings”) exposure of the chest and back, especially ths back, is beneficial, as the skin, toughened by exposure, is a better protection to the underlying- tissues, and tlie lungs are then less liable to dise.ase. Women, therefore, in dccollette dresses do not notice draught and ordinary temperature changes. But tliis does not mean that they are not affected by them. Until the skin of tho back has become toughtened through frequent exposure they are more susceptible to respiratory diseases. If the skin of the back has become toughened, tho cold will not penetrate readily, and there is little clanger of disease as there is when the chest, knees, head, face or hands are exposed. Tho short skirt, the bare chest, and knees are advocated as hygienic measure, and they survive.
