OTAKI WATER WORKS
TENDERS ACCEPTED. A meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held yesterday. His AVer- , ship the Mayor (Air. .T. P. Brandon) ! presiding. Crs. C. Kilsby, H. Kilmister, i T. O’Rourke, H. Cockrell, P. Rikihaua, and 11. Taylor were also present. Tenders dealing with the laying (labour only) of (1) 190 chains of 4-inch mains from the Post Office, along Tasman Road and streets at beach; (A) 100 chains of 4-inch and about five chains of (i-incli mains along Rangiutu Road and street intersections: and (3) carting of 4-inch pipes off Alain Road and Waerenga Road to Tasman and Rangiuru beaches, were received as follows: —Sam Alc-AliHan 33s chain (Tasman), R. Scott (Packakariki) “7s (id. Senrancke and Morgan St's and OSs, Thomson and Wood ASs (Tasman) and SAs Pd (Rangiutu), P. Maloney 335, T. Atorgan 33s each. Sam McMillan 33s (>d (Rangiutu), Eync and Cootcs 37s each, D. Kennedy 3As fid (Tasman) and 33s fid (Rangiuru). The tender of Thomson and AA'ood was accepted. The tender of Air. Guy at fis 3d petton for carting pipes was accepted. The Borough Foreman. Cr. O’Rourke, after speaking highly of the foreman ill. Webby) said lie considered he was insufficiently paid, and would therefore like to see his wages increased. lie moved that AVebby be given £l per week extra daring the progress of the works. The Mayor agreed with Cr. O’Rourke, and said the Borough foreman was worthy of every consideration, especially its he had the interests of the town at heart. Cr. Cockrell seconded. On the motion being put only the Mayor, and Crs. Ivilsby and Cockrell voted for it. Cr. Taylor said he agreed that Cr. O'Rourke’s remarks were sound, Imt he thought a rise of £! per week too big a jump. AVebby was certainly worth it. but he desired to know what attitude tin* Council would take after the completion of the works—would they reduce the wage? Ti:c Mayor said AA’ebby was honestly entitled to :t rise, and if the Council did not do something some other local body would snap him up. Cr. Taylor said he favoured a rise but not such tt big one. Cr. O’Rourke then moved that Webby be given 10s per week increase. « Cr. Rikihana thought, in view of the J fact that a rise had recently boon h granted, that this amount was too high. Cr. Kilmister moved .as an amendment that the wage remain as at present but that AVebby be paid double rates (4s per hour) for overtime. Cr. Kil.-by suggested that Webby be given £.l for each special trip, but Cr. Kilmister declined to add this to his arnend- \ nieni. Cr. O’Rourke’s motion was Hum put, but was defeated, the Mayor, Crs. O’Rourke and Cockrell being the only ones in favour. Cr. Kilmister’s amendment was then put and carried, although Cr. O’Rourke maintained the increase would be even bigger than he had suggested.
