CROQUET GREERS WANTED
i * : DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH COUR. I OIL. ! I REQUEST FOR MORE LAND. | Airs. Percival and Miss Lee, representing croquet players, waited on the j Otaki Borough Council yesterday, when the matter of additional land for croquet greens was discussed. ALr s. Per- ! cival said it was desired that two sections on Alill Road should be puchasc-d for croquet greens, pointing out that it was through the instrumentality of croquet players that a large sum had been raised for the improvement of the Domain. In view of this she thought they should have first consideration. The Alayor: We have already provided for two croquet greens. Airs. Percival: Sports’ bodies are crying out that we are utilising too much of their ground. The Alavor: The Clerk is preparing ( plans. Aliss Lee: If greens are laid down ears we stop people from going on them? \ We are afraid that cricketers will be invading our area when chasing their ! ball. | The Alayor: You can fence the area in; the Council has power to prevent persons from interfering with the green*. There will in,- no ela-hing, ami no one will do any damage. Mrs. Pereivnl. in again advocating for the sections on Alill Read, said the Domain was not large enough ler all -pons. The Mayor said the area would he big enough for years to come, and that there was no chance of the Council purchasing further land. ; Cr. O’Rourke pointed out that the carnival was got up for improvement et • tin- Domain. I Mrs. Pereivnl: Yes. but in the plan ' it was siiou il that additional section, * could bo bought. No one hail ever dreamed that such tt *lllll of money ’ i would be raised. The Alayor considered it would bo 1 better to have a small domain well ’ j kept than a big domain ill kept. Miss Lee: By purchasing the minii tional sections the domain would be improved. The sections could be-secur-ed at a low price and made into ideal croquet lawns. 1 The Mayor said the Council could no( deal with tlie matter till full details were available. Cr. Kilsby said the time was getting ! on and there should be no further do* lay. If the laud was to be bought, and 1 he favoured its purchase, the Council 1 should move at once, and if not div 1 cussed at once should not be lctf 1 a for than next Thursday. The Alayor: AVe can’t deal with it till the Clerk is well again. s 1 1 Airs. Percival: The matter is not out! ! for the C'lerk, but for the Council. Miss Leer If the Mayor gets tan 1 , “flu” will It mean a further delay I ' 1 (Laughter). 1 The Mayor promised that the matter I would be dealt with next Thursday. Airs. Percival: I would like to know who is in our favour. Thanks, Mr. Kilsby, for speaking for ust At this the deputation withdrew, | and Borough Councillors breathed ! freelv again.
