{ SOTJTHERNEBS (17) v. NORTHEENI ERS (8). Sftt-arday was a'miserable day for football, but, nevertheless, quite a number brave* the elements to watch the North v. South match, played at Otaki. Owing ta a mishap to th'e train the fcihaniioa players were considerably delayed, and the match did not start till 4.15. In consequence two spells of thirty mimrtes each were played. The game, considering- the greasy state of th» ground and-''•'ball, was a good one, players handling th« oval remarkabiy v. ell. Knoagli footwork, however, was - ot indulged in, but, nevertheless, it ,-, as chiefly a forward game, with bright flashes of back-play at times. The contest from the start was in favour of the Southerners, and after some hard play Chappie Enoka scored a try, which LMoki failed to convert. On call of time Gray scored, but AToki, til- ' lhough kicking well, again failed tw I add the major points. Southerners 6, | Northerners nil. Both tries were the ' outcome of smart play. In the second half, after Melntyre had made an opening, SiKjiy dodged among the remaining backs fn great style and surprised all by scoring. Kuiti easily converted, 11—0. The best piece of play on the part of the Northerners was a fine run by Bell, who. however, was not supported. As a result of a mark which followed in fronl of the goal, Koperi kicked a- neat goal. 11—3. Chappie Enoka then responded by scoring another try. which remained unconverted, 14—3. Moody retaliated and scored for the Northerners, Parr converting, 14—S. Just on call of time Gray scored, bur Kuiti failed at goal, 17—Is. :,lr. Hoio Karauti was referee. It is ii noteworthy fact that all of the Southerners' tries were scored by Hui Mai players, but it must not be overlooked that Melutyre opened up play on quite a number of occasions. This player was unselfish, and was | splendidly supported. The forwards on ' both sides wokred hard, but the North- ' enters were out-classed in all departments, while most of the backs were f ti mediocre lot. The Weraroa seniors defeated Levin on Saturday at Levin. B—o, while Foxton defeated Shannon. Otaki forfeited to Manakau. Manawattt beat Hawke's Bay. 29—6. NorWi v. youth Island, G all.
