OTAKI WATER WORKS.
AN EXCELLENT TEST. The Ota lei Eire Brigade held its iirst practice on Monday night. The Mayoi (before turning the water on) referred to the obligations of each resident to the members of our Volunteer Fire Brigade. They had done good work in the past with a very poor plant, but llotv the high-pressure water had been installed the Council intended to help them to secure appliance? in keeping with the requirements. He (the Mayor) lieped practices would be enjoyable to each member of the Brigade, and hoped that in time they would become very efficient, certain it was. they would prove equal to brigades in other towns. K. ' Mr. Brandon stated that this was not the oflieial opening, but just a prelim inary practice. The Borough Engineer explained to the members the general lay-out of the KPtieulation, and pointed out the control valves, along with the effect on the system, when the main along Waerenga Road rvae installed. Tb# men, under Captain Mnthic, connected up about 100 fewt of hose and played the water down the main street. The Bank of New Zealand building nex received attention. The force of the water was then shown to advantage. The stream of water could be placed over the top before spreading, and the general opinion expressed tras the high pressure water schwme would be a distinct success as far as Jire-fightiug was concerned. The members of the Brigade afterwards held a meeting for the purpose of deciding future practices, and it is expected that such, will be held on Monday evenings. Great credit is due to Mr. Davies fengineer) for the excellent service, and it is indeed gratifying to know that the pressure is equal to thy best. Many we no afraid the service would be a failure, but the reverse has proved to bo the case.
