OBITUARY.
MR W. J. BOWDEN. OF KAIWARRA. Another of I lie old colonists in the person os Mr W. Bowden passed away at his residence, l'ore street, Kaiwarra, on I'riday last, aged 71. The deceased arrived in Wellington by the ship Ocean Mail in Ix 7-1. Mr Bowden followed fanning pursuits immediately upon his arrival, bui subsequently entered the service of Messrs \V. Book and Sons, of Molc.swortli street, Weilington, front where he v a.- transferr'eti to a branch service at Kaiwarra in a managerial capacity. He was twenty- ! seven years connected with the firm, and occupied the position of local postmaster for a period of twenty-one years. Always keenly inteiested in C'lncat ional matters, he assoeiated him self with school management, and held tin position of chairman of the local committee uninterruptedly for twenty one years. He was public spirited, and i was always interested in local and gen- I oral politics. The severance of his long connection with Messrs \V. Cook and Sons was occasioned by the Governj meut purchase of the freehold where j i the business was located for the pur- | pose of widening the old Jiutt ioad. and j the straightening of the railroad. The j | business reverted to the eldest son, Mr !W. H. Bowden, thereafter to Mi I j Charles Bowden, and is at present con- j trolled by Messrs Albert, and Alfred 1 Bowden. The deceased latterly joined the staff of the House of Representatives, of which he was a very popular officer. Three of his sous inherited the public spiritednes.- of the father, and at present occupy public positions in various capacities.
