HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday at Wellington. Present: Crs. H. D. Atkinson (chairman). A. I. Mackay, C. I. Limbrick, J. Whiteman, A. Campbell, and E. A. Guard. A deputation of Taita settlers waited on the Council and asked for road, footpath, and drainage improvement.— The Chairman promised that the matter would be given every consideration but a deal depended on finances. A deputation from Trentham, Hcretaunga and Silverstream Ratepayers' Association waited on the Council and complained that they had paid a deal in rates and wanted something in retarn. They asked for a return of rates. collected by the last Council and what was done with the money. Roads were now in a disgraceful condition, but they objected to special rates being struck. They suggested the Hun road be left and the Government forced to

take it over. "Let it become impassable, and then the Government will have to act" was the final remark. — Matter to be given attention, although it was stated that finances were very short.

A deputation from Pay's Bay urged upon the Council the fact that road improvement was necessary—roads being in a deplorable state. —-To be given consideration.

Cr. Limbrick reported that he and Cr. Mackay had met a number of ratepayers relative to a bridge at Pukorun mid gave them the understand that the Council was willing for a loan to be raised, but if so the district would be specially rated. Beyond this no further action had been taken. —Report received.

The Finanacc Committee's reportshowed thai £J445 had been scheduled for payment. It was also reported that the new motor lorry would shortly be in commission and the Committee recommended that a proper system of costing the works carried out by the lorries be set up and that the drivers be instructed accordingly. The Clerk reported that alter the accounts were paid the bank balance would he £9] His 3d. It was decide.l that workmen be instructed to keep proper time-sheets and report the locality where they had worked 'lining the month. Cr. Campbell said if the workmen failed to do as ordered their places should be filled by new men, Inspector's Report. The Inspector (Mr J. W. Cudby) reported that 200 yards of crushed metal was being supplied by the Bluestoncl Quarry Co. for the southern end of the! Pahautanui-Paremata road, and that j necessary timber had been secured for j Duck creek bridge. A land slide bad ' occurred on the Hutt-Waikanau roa.i between the Summit and Rikiorangi. The road was not blocked and could '»■ negotiated with care, and attention had been given the matter by cutting into the hill to provide a necessary width foi safety. A similar thing had occurred near Mr Monk'.- on the Xgaliawa road. This being attended to. There wen; two culverts which also needed renewing, they having served their u.-< fulness and now were unequal t-i the heavy weights that passed over them.
