FOOTBALL.
The football season is now in full swing, and it is to be hoped thai all players will do their best for the sport and help keep it clean. It is also hoped that any offenders taken before the Cnion should be treated as they deserve: it has been found that cautions an- of little use. Football is, on the whole, carried out in a clean, gentlemanly manner in Otaki and district. It is a grand game—a clean, healthy sport that tends to develop the muscles, and build up healthy young men—and if played properly, helps very materially in teaching men to control their feelings under provocation, and to behave as gentlemen under trying conditions. However, if players allow themselves to get "out of hand" and behave in an "unseemly way, football will soon come into disrepute, and lose the support of the better class of people. The
„-,. of bad language, too, is much to be regretted. We have no doubt thai the Rugby Cnion will heartily back up referees in any stand taken. We have a splendid lot of young fellows playing football and we are fortunate, too, in having as referees men of standing, who are doing their utmost to assist in fostering football and keeping it on a high standard. We ask all players and the public generally to assist.
