LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.
Any organisation that aims at raising the intellectual status of a people is deserving of every encouragement. On every side we hear prominent people deploring the .fuel that so many young people pay little heed to iutelleclual development, and are becoming more and more devoted to pleasureseeking, sometimes of a doubtful nature, but in many instance-', more especially in the small towns, little is done to provide counter attractions on fl higher standard. We have in the, Otaki Literary and Debating Society an organisation founded for the en- ■ eourag-cme.-vt of the study of literature, ' music', elocution, and public speaking. I providing entertainment Cor the winter mouths, and at th'e same time, giving the people opportunities for social intercourse. During the past year or two. this society has had most sV-ecess-i'ul and enjoyable sessions. Its membership has steadily increased, interest in the meetings has grown, and everyone must agree that it is now a most valuable asset to the town, and should be encouraged by all who are desirous of promoting the best interests of the people. In view of the splendid work done by Literary and Debating Society in the pa.st. and the possibilities of expansion in the future, we heartily coinit.end this organisation to the public for their cordial support.
