BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
To Tile Editor. Sir,- —Great credit is due to Mr Byron Brown in endeavouring to lay before the electors his views, and also in inviting the other candidates to do likewise. I tint sure Air Brown’s address wits equal to any dramatic recital for which we would, under ordinary circumstances, have hud to book our seat:, and as tor his flights into the realms of fancy, we]) it was superb. But to get down to Borough affairs: The few questions lie was asked were not, to my mind, answered in plain speech. For instance, re road widening. Only one answer was given plainly by Councillor Taylor, who wanted to wait !" years. Why’ Could not the machinery be set in order now? What if a lire occurred and the premises that "ere distroyed rebuilt? Wliv not set the frontage back to make the road a chain or more and each place as it uas tebuilt set back. Ido they want to wait till good buildings are erected aiol then have to pay the piper for the delac . Ihe Municipal building scheme was treated the same, so were till other questions quibbled, quilled, and put aside without a direct answer, and Mr Broun was the most guilty in that respect. 1 consider the main duty of the people ol Otiiki is to make the place attractive both to residents and visitors. »nd the best way to do that is with wide streets, decent buildings, decent reserves, and a Municipal building worth having. Our present offices encourage the idea that Otgki is a pov-erty-stricken and business-lacking place, so why not improve it even if rates do go up a bit; we will get it back in business. Thanking you for allowing me to encroach so much on your space.—l am, etc., W. H. PERCIVAL.
