seen as a Canadian trapper in the North country, iti a story that is virile and
fast-moving, and powerful drama. The story develops in an interesting fashion, ■ with not a few excellent exterior shots - to beautify the production. The plot ■ material, concern? thp tyranny of tht- • Factor? of the Hudson Hay Co.. who ( were originally invested, with supreme i authority in their territory, and who. 1 even to-day. in the remote sections, are practically absolute. Into this country conies a "free trader"—one who dareto compete with the Company. The Factor captures him. fires his post, and demands -hat he cease to buy and sell fur.- independently. The alternative is "the long traverse." This is a trick of the Factor.- when they want to do away with a man. He is denied food and arms at the trading post and sent alone into the snows. It is the girl—the daughter of the iron-hearted Factor, who give, him the rifle w save him on his long "journey to death." But he is recaptured before he has obtained j his start. The;; folio—a the climax, j The Factor is for immediate punish-1 ment, despite the fact that his daughter loves the victim, when he discovers that the hero the sort of a mw he wronged years ago. Bepentence of the villain is never a very satisfactory solution for a drama, but in this case it fits in logically and satisfactorily. The final shot shows a "brigade" of canoes, floating dowr the river. The canoes are against a primitive background and a rugged settlement.
