THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY
An item of significance to all those j connected with the dairy industry ap- ; pears in our cables to the ef- * feet that there is a possibility of the resumption of the butter export trade { from Siberia to London. At the present time the dairy herds of Siberia j number about 40 percent, of the pre- j war total, and already a small quant i- j ry of butter has been exported. In the days before the war, Siberia was a large and growing exporter of butter ' to England, and though the quality of the butter was not nearly equal to that of Denmark and the Dominions, the Russian butter had its effect on thcLondon prices. While not wishing to appear pessimistic, we must point out that Xew Zealand cannot expect the present high prices for butter and cheese to continue indefinitely. The | Argentine has become a considerable j exporter of dairy produce, and now* i with Siberia again sending butter to | London, supplies are not likely to run short of the demand. Our aim must be • to export only the best quality, and - thus command the best price. t
