In j fact, he said that when he was passing through Dunedin he called at the police station and asked to be taken into custody on a charge of vagrancy, as this appeared to him to be the only way 1 1o get a meal. However, it was point- I ; cd out that if lie was arrested he was j Labie to get three months, so instead | he was provided with the wherewithal to procure a meal; but when spoken to in Balclutha he seemed to think lie might just as well be in gaol, as he could not get work or food.
