Thinking her to be the daughter of his cheri.-hed friend. "Mae" takes Maria in and surrounds her with every comfort. He tells Maria of his love for her. and she. fearing to lose him, keeps back the truth about her identity. "Mac" has a deadly enemy, who has never rested since the appearance of Maria to discover exact- ' ly who -he is. He discovers that she is only a poor native Mexican girl, and knowing that the new- will he a terrible blow to "Mac." loses no time in Telling him. ••Mac" goes to Maria and she confesses. He denounces her and she isaver town. After she has left her lover realises that he- cannot hve without her. He begins a search for her and just as he is. despaired of ever finding her. -he comes to town as the premiere dariser.se of a big theatrical company. After the show he .-ends Lis card to her dressing room, but she will not see him. Then the artist's wife. with whom she had made her home. tells her of ••Mac's" untiring search for her and of hi? misery at being un- ' able to iind her. Mar:;- relent* and goes to "Mac's" home. Overjoyed at seeing her again, he tells her of his great love, srd ''they Jive happily e«*er after."
