OTAKI SURF CLUB.

ANNUAL CARNIVAL. The annual carnival in connectio with the above was held at the Otal beach on Saturday under unfavoui able circumstances—a cold wind an high seas prevailing. Luckily, _ how over, rain which threatened shortly ai ter mid-day, held off, and a blue sk; was in evidence. The suggestion o holding the land drill, in a shelters nook on the croquet lawn was a gooc one, and here the teams wore judgec by Mr J. A. Dully, while Mr F. Chap man acted as marshal. Land Drill. for method of rescue, and 20 for resusci tation. Maranui put up a splendid per formanee, securing first with 71 points. Worser Bay team secured second place with 70; points, Otaki third with G-li, and Lyall Bay fourth with (334. The

winning team comprised Edwards (cap tain), Croft, Swain, Hughes, Adams. T'odcn, and Diaper. All proved most efficient in their drill. The Woraei

Bay team, also very -mart in their actions, well deserved second place. Members of the team were: Lavell (cap tain), Thomas, Alexander, Buttcrworth, Blackney, Grimstone, and Watson. Otaki, who secured third, received rounds of applause on entering the

arena, and again when leaving. i'or a first year team they did remarkably well ami are to be highly commended. Mr Ralph Smith, who coached the team, was well satisfied, but stated the mem bcrs had done even better at practices.

The team was Wills (captain), Tahiwi (2), Piki, Krogh, I'eupotete and Kiwai. The Lyall Bay team, who finished a point behind Otaki, comprised Ash bridge (captain). Beere, Dawkins, Mollier, Wright and Hickey. March Past. After this event the teams, headed by standard bearers, marched to tin beach, where six (earns —Otaki, Maranui, Lyall Bay, Island Boy, Paekakarinui, Lyall Bay, Island Bay, PackakariMarch Past. There was loud applause when the result was made known that Otaki had won, securing five for appearance and nine for marching, out of a total of ten for appearance and ten for marching. Lyall Bay was second

with 5 and Si points respectively, Maranui third with -1 and !>, Paokakariki next with 5 and 7, then Worse, Bay with 4 and 6, followed by Island Bay with I and 5. The Otaki team consisted of Smith, Wilis, Maafu, Tahiwi (2), .1. Riwai, E. Krogh. Mr W. H. Field, in making the above

results known, said it gave him pleas : tire to be present and stated he was ! pleased the local Club had done so well j He also congratulated other Clubs on their splendid performances. He fully recognised the good work being accom plished by Surf Clubs, and considered such Clubs-should lie heartily suppo'rted by the general community and the Government in particular. Cheers were then given for the Otaki and Maranui Clubs, winners of the two competitions, while cheers were after wards, given Cm the unsuccessful team:-, Life-Saving. The Lii'u-Saving competition wu: then carried out, Faekakariki being tin. j only team not to enter. The contest ■ was won by Lyall Bay with 7-ii point... Maranui being second with 69, and Otaki (Smith, Wills, Maafu, Tahiwi (2). Krogh and Eiwai) third with 67. Worser Bay secured 611 points and Island Bay 55i. Points were given on uniform, condition of gear, discipline; beltman's ability, fastening belt, control of line, discretion in breakers, care of subject, control of line by captain, control of reel and resusciation. General. During the afternoon the Otaki Bras? Band endeavoured to play selections, but after the firs' gave up ai! hope. The refreshment stall, erected on the beach, had also to be abandoned on account of the wind, but a. near-by cot tage was made good use of. and here ladies dispensed afternoon tea, etc. Those responsible for good work were Mesdamcs Evans, Eddy. L. Kilmister, rSUcolson and Alex. Wilson, while Messrs Heald and Evans also did Trojan work. The general committee, as a whole, worked well, while the secretarial duties were ablv carried out by Mi Eric Mosley. After the display Mrs Mosley entertained visiting- representatives at afternoon tea. which was fully appreciated. Mr Ralph Smith, in conversation with a "Mail'/ representative, strongly ad-

voeated for the establishment" of swimming baths in connection with t; '_ to schools, and considered a district like Otaki, with so many able swimmers, would soon make a name for itself. He

Mr Smith considered the Government should render assistance by giving a substantial subsidy on money raised, and now that the high-pressure scheme was under way in Otaki. he thought an eftor should be made to secure baths ±u desired to express his thanks to- Mi Wills (captain of'the Club) and residents in general for the support .accorded him during his visit to Otakt. •_) dance was held in the Town Hall in , the evening, when the interior of the ,- building was gaily decorated with bunt- } iag. The floor was in fair order, the j music by the Tahiwi orchestra was all I that could be desired; while Mr Ralph . ieald, assisted by Mr George Evans, '.urried out the duties of M.C. The lormer, in opening proceedings, asked, as there were many strangers present, that all formalities be dispensed with, a {remark that found general favour. I From this till midnight all present spent a happy time in dancing, singing and speechifying. Ladies who are deserving of great kudos are Mcsdames L. Ivilmister, Eddy, Evans, Nash, Alex. "Wilson and Nicolson. Misses Connie Evans, Gladys Baker, and Alice Noble assisted at the sweets stall. A feature of the evening were the decorations in the supper rooms, choice flowers being most artistically arranged by Mrs Macleod (sister to Mrs Alex Wilson) and Miss Pointon, of the Christchurch staff of the Karitane Hospital.

Presentations. During the evening Mr Byron Brown welcomed the visitors, and spoke etilogistically of services rendered to the Otaki Club by Mr Ralph Smith, and complimented the local Club on doing so well. The march past, said Mr Brown, was a credit to the boys. After handing the cut>, won by the Maranui Club, to the captain, he called for cheers which were lustily given. Mr . Brown (hen presented the Otaki Cup to the captain of the Lyall Bay Club, and medals to individual members, after which he expressed a hope that, the carnival would be held at an earlier date next vear and under more favourable conditions. After stating that a trophy was due to the Otaki Club for winning the March Past all joined in singing "For They Are -Tolly Good Fellows." The captains of the various Clubs briefly re-' turned (hanks, accompanied by cheers. , Cheers were (hen given for Mr Brown, it being stated that he was not only the; founder of the'Otaki carnival but was ] responsible for the Wellington Clubs j commencing carnivals. {

A Further Display. Members of the visiting Clubs, together with a team of Otaki juniors, indulged in marching yesterday afternoon, the display being witnessed by afair number. The cold wind, however, did not tend to make the outing enjoyable, and after a. life-saving exhibition by the four visiting teams an adjournment was made to the kiosk grounds. Awards.
