HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
j MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held-at Wellington yesterday. Present: Crs. H. D. Atkinson (Chairman), A. I. Mackay, 0. I. Limbriek. J. Whiteruan, A. B. Ltlwards. 'and H. Foley. j Correspondence was dea.lt with from ' the Alanawatu Blueston Quarry Co. making application for a reduction on hire charges for the stone crusher.— Not entertained. From the ranger (C. G. Griffith) slating that during the month he had seized thirteen head of stock, and intended iaking action against certain offend■rs. (Jr. Edwards stated that the road-man-ranger had done splendid work in his Riding and that the roads were now clear.
From J. Odlin and Co. acknowledging receipt, of Council \s letter advising that: the Council would pay towards the maintenance ot' Maunganui road and
asking that the Council supply six pipes to repair a culvert on the same road. They would carry out the maintenance thoroughly despite the fact that it would cost them a considerable sum, and asked £1 for £1 subsidy for metalling work. —Decided to supply the pipes as asked for, but declined to find further finance.
From J. Campbell and Co. admitting no liability for danger done to the Judgef'ord bridges, but offering to pay, without prejudice, the sum of £2 in settlement of the Council's claim. They pointed out no uoticc appeared on the bridges stating they were unsafe. —Decided to claim for full amount (£4 IDs dd). It was pointed out that several bridges were unsafe for heavy traffic. From Wairarapa Automobile Club drawing attention to the speeding ot motors at Pliuiiuerton and the extension, and asking the Council to take action in the matter. The letter pointed out that cars frequently exceeded the speed limit ami travelled at dangerous rates.— Received.
From 11. Smith confirming his offer to contribute one-third of the cost of forming and metalling the Parade extension, Paekakariki, and asking that the work be put iu hand immediately. — Held over till the framing of the estimates.
From R. Mulkcrn, objecting to the road exchange made recently by Mr
Gray at Pukerua, and stating the old . Pukerua track should nor bo closed.— It was stated that the track had been closed and therefore no further action . could be taken, while a road exchange 'had been legally made svith Mr Gray.— ! Decided to reply that the application j was late and that the Council cou'd not
I now assist. j From A. Gollop, offering to hire motor ; lurry to the County at £4 per day, driver included.—Not accepted. I .From W. Griffiths, applying for the position of Jiii' inspector at Paekakoriki. —Accepted. It was decided to purchase n radiator for the stone crusher, the price 10 lie £46 10s, Inspector's Report. The Inspector (Mr Cudby) reported that the old bridge at Pakuratahi was absolutely useless for any purpose and should be substituted by a pipe culvert at a cost of £lB, or with filling, etc., £3l 2s o'd. He reported that the. parade
at Paekakariki vra> being attended to to prevent further encroachment. A shute had been erected to expedite tbe loading of soil for tilling in the channel. and scoop.- secured for removing die sand. He stated that lorries containing a load of i2 tons in weight were being driven across small bridges, and in one place half the decking was broken. The Council's motor lorry was now b«ing used on the main west road between Paraparaumu and Paekakariki, while on the recommendation of Cr. IMackay two new tyres had been secured. The Mungakotukutuku hill road was in a very bad state, and the men from Paekakariki and Paraparaumu lengths had been put on for a few days. The Clerk reported that there was a credit balance, after paying accounts. , of £.1610. while rates outstanding amounted to £2757 on .January 31st. Summonses had been issued against a mun- , ber of defaulters.
