TENNIS.

MANAKAU DEFEAT LEVIN. On Wednesday afternoon last the Levin Tennis Club engaged the Manakau Club on the latter's courts. There was a large gathering of Manakau residents, and the weather being excellent, a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. There were some splendid games and very close finishes, Manakau eventually winning by one set. Some of the younger players showed fine form, notably Bull and Ness. A new player for Manakau, who gave evidence of great promise was C. Diamond. Afternoon tea, provided by the ladies of the Manakau ’Club, was in charge of Misses Phillips and Jones. The winners in C. and D. sections (Palmerston and Otaki) of the Country Club competitions met on the Otaki courts on Saturday. The weather conditions were ideal and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent, a delightful afternoon tea was given the Otaki Judies in their usual, generous style, and the visitors were noj backward with their praise and appreciation, Although Otaki were defeated they were not disgraced, and with a little more hard practice might easily turn the ’ahles on the larger centre.
