BIG FIRE AT AUCKLAND.

ST. JOSEPH’S ORPHANAGE DEMOLISHED. Auckland, March 4. St. Jocsph’s Orphanage at Takapuua, a 16-roomed building, including lour dormitories, was destroyed by lire alter midnight. The inmates, of whom there woro 109, including 14 infants, escaped without injury, and have been accommodated temporarily in the neighbourhood.

Tho lire originated in a bathroom, and is believed to have started from a gas-jet, which, under the regulations, had to be kept lighted all night. The building was erected about seventy years ago by French missionaries under Bishop Pompallier, with walls of solid masonry, and was used as a college for the education of Maori aud European youths until 1893, when it was taken over by tho Sisters of Mercy as an orphanage.

The insurances are £SOOO in the South British and Phoenix offices.
