The Manakau school picnic is being held at Packaknriki to-day, and it is anticipated that the children will have tlie time of their lives. No less a sum than £J4 was raised by a shop day towards the children’s outing.

A beautiful bouquet was presented to Miss Malcolm, and Mr Mickle, IreudrnastC'i of the school, made a telling speech, which was punctuated with applause. He said that he had been requested by the ladies’ committee to hand over those tokens of love and esteem, and j to wish Miss Malcolm every happiness in her tut lire- life; that it was only natural that the people of Manakau should take on interest in Miss Malcolm’s future home just a ■ she hau taken tin interest ttnd pleasure in moulding the characters of the future manhood and womanhood of the district: that there was one regret on account of Mr .Robinson’s inability to be present that evening, as it would have been a splendid opportunity “to call him over the <c .Is’’ for daring' to steal her away from among her friends; that it was rumoured there was going to be a petition for a stay of proceedings, but as this was a legal proceeding it would probably be too late to avert the ineviiable; that it was hoped the presents would be useful in the household, and if there were any to spare jr was hoped that Miss Malcolm would use them with vigour on Mr Robinson if he failed to execute her commissions in the future, as for instance to post the invitations * o the party until the day after. Speaking in a more serious vein, Mr Mickle said that he felt ho was voicing the opinion of the whole district when he said that Miss Malcolm would, in years to come, be affectionately remembered by all for her sterling worth. Miss Malcolm replied in a neat little speech, thanking one and all for the great kindness she had received in Manakau. During the evening vocal and musical items were contributed by Miss Malcolm, Mi's Smith, Miss Ivimbcll and Mr “Walsh aw, which were all much appreciated. Mr T. D. Clifford officiated as M.C.
