UNITED PROTEST FROM CHURCHES. AGAINST USE OF MUNICIPAL RESERVES. ■ RESOLUTION TO BE SENT TO , COUNCIL. A united protest was made by various Palmerston church congregations yesterday against the utilising of the municipal reserves for Sunday games, a practice whose steady growth has been regarded with distinct disfavour by a largo section of the church-going community, The following resolution, which has previously had the endorsement of the Cuba Street Methodists and the- Deacon's Court of the Baptist Church, was carried in other churches yesterday, and will be presented to the Borough Council at its next meeting:— “To the Mayor and Councillors, Palmerston North Borough Council, —Gentlemen: Having been credibly informed that tennis is being played on the Municipal greens in Fitzhcrbert and Fcatherston Streets on Sundays, we feel, as representatives of a considerable section of the community, that it ought not to be permitted. while not presuming to dictate to the individual conscience concerning the matter of Sunday observance, we do most emphatically protest on behalf of Iho Christian conscience of this town, against the use of town property maintained by rates contributed by those -a.-fco hold Sunday in special regard, as as by those who think otherwise. We would point out that the playing of football on Sunday on the North Street ground lias been stopped. It may be said that the- ban thereon was on account of the disturbance occasioned, but we feed that -if one kind of sport is forbidden on Sunday, other kinds ought to be forbidden also. We appeal to. you, who are custodians in a large measure of our civic life, and representatives of the people as a whole, to give this matter your most urgent and best attention. -
