OTAKI BEACH.

TENNIS COURTS TO BE LAID. At a meeting of the Otaki Borougli Council last night a letter was read from Mr Byron Brown, stating that he desired to put down two tennis courts at the beach and wished help from the Council.

Cr. Broadway, while regretting that the town did not possess more men like Mr Brown, considered the Council

should help. The Chairman agreed and said by having the courts they would bo an inducement to visitors and benefit ;_the town and district. The Clerk said he was willing to help in any way, and suggested the Council authorise the work to be done. The work would mean the employment of labour, while Mr Brown would stand all expenses incurred. Cr. Kilsby thought Mr Brown should j have the land prepared, for the tarwork, and the Council’s men do the ne-» .cessary asphalt work. The Mayor said anything that could be done for the benefit of the district should be done; the Couucil should help all who were willing to help themselves. Cr. Cockrell drew the Council’s atten-

tion to the minute ou the books stating that no asphalting be done for private individuals. The Clerk pointed out that the Council’s street work, thanks to up-to-date appliances, -would be finished in five weeks provided the weather was favorable, and considered it would be no hardship to start the men ou the work immediately the streets were finished. In the meantime the asphalt could be prepared. It was decided to grant the request.
