“OUR BEST LAND."
To the Editor. Sir.—And so we are tuld by the i-A'U- | don exhibition commissioners, who, by! the way, were not appointed or oompe- j tent to value land, that tire best laud 1 j in the Dominion is only worth £3O to 1 1 £-10 per acre. Be it known that these : I gentlemen come to, or vs ere let! to this | conclusion, after a Lortniglit's sojuuru *in this country, -t venture to state that ! a verv small portion of that time was j spent in walking over agricultural | lands, and further that they were not j led to this conclusion by the farmer or j producer, but by others interested in finance and opposed to fanners’ banks and Ibfnte banks. If only those mis- 1 guided gentlemen of the commission I could spend Id months here, with uu- , biassed minds, they would no doubt conclude that, because of our superior climate, good agricultural and dairying I lands, here are worth, at least. £3O to | £40 —more than in any part of Britain. I believe that first-class agricultural 1 and dairying land at £BO per acre, con- 1 venient to the city of Wellington, say 1 in Hutt or Otaki districts, would show j a greater profit than similar land at £4O per acre convenient to the city of Lon- i 1 don, and the owner of such land would j 1 j be much better off here, liiuuicially and * - socially. In conclusion it is unfortu- ■ 1 j nate that opinions so quickly formed. i in absence of a fuller knowledge of the • I subject, should be given so much pro- : I mineuce as in the case of the conrmis- -: sion referred to. —I am, etc.. 5 JOHN FAITH. 1 ; | To Haro, February stli. 1923. j
