BIG BLAZE IN THE CITY
WELLINGTON BOND STORE BURNT. One of the most disastrous fires that have occurred in Wellington for some years past broke out shortly before 11 o'clock on Friday night. The outbreak originated in the bond store at (he rear of the premises of Messrs R. Martin, Ltd., oil, colour, glass and wallpaper merchants, 34-30 Manners Street. The flames quickly swept the building, and despite the efforts of forty firemen, burnt fiercely for an hour and a half. By one o'clock on Saturday morning the flames were practically quenched. They had been prevented from reaching the premises of Tingey- and Campbell.
DANGER SPOT SWEPT AWAY. Wellington. Saturday 0. At the height of the lire live firemen on the roof at the back of Martin"? moved to safety a moment before the roof collapsed. The Brigade authorities regard the fire as having removed one of the- worst danger spots in the city. If there had bee" any wind probably most of the block would have been destroyed.
