GENERAL ELECTIONS.

I PARTIES APPARENTLY EQUAL. I ' LABOUR MAKES SUBSTANTIAL GAINS. GOVERNMENT LOSES EIGHT SEATS. The 19-2 elections yesterday have brought about an unprecedented situation. With a number of seats still in the balance it is impossible to place the final state of the parties. Hon. E. I’. Lee holds his seat by one vote and P. Lee is behind Mr McPherson, and lion. I). 11. Guthrie leads by 28, with sufficient absent votes, to come to upset both seats. There are also one or two others still in doubt, and the l'ato of the Government hangs in the balance. Giving Mr Isitt in as a Reform supporter and counting in the Maori members, the state of the parties at: the present moment is apparently as follows: — REFORM 41 LIBERALS 19 LABOUR 18 INDEPENDENT 2 Among the sensational defeats are Dr. Thacker for Christchurch, the Speaker (Sir F. Lang), Mr Hamilton (Awurua), Mr David Jones (Ivaiapoi), Mr Jennings (Waitomo), Mr E. Dixon (Patca), Colonel Mitchell (Wellington South), Mr T. E. Y. Seddou (Westland), Mr McCallum (Wairau), Mr A. McNicoll (Pahiatua); Mr V, Reed (Bay of Islands), and Mr Clutha Mackenzie (Auckland East). Labour gains include Napier, Waimarino, Auckland E., Westland, Christchurch, and Wellington (2). Liberalism made important strides on this coa?r. Mr Richard Cobbo still has an excellent chance oi securing Oroua, and Mr Ransome’s victory in Pahiatua is a notable one. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. HOW THE VOTING WENT. Following are the results from the various electorates in the North and South Islands. The names marked by an asterisk are thc'-sitting members at the time of the poll. MR MASSEY’S OPINION. APPEAL TO THE LIBERALS. Wellington, Last Night. Mr Massey stated to-night: “It is impossible for me to say that the results of the election have been satisfactory either to the Dominion or to the Government. The voting in several electorates has been very close, a«d we cannot say yet what the final results will be. In some instances, the majorities have been under 59, while there 1 are three or four hundred absent votjers’ permits to come. It seems to me j that the results of this election show | the necessity for the reconstruction of , the parties. The three-party system cannot possibly be satisfactory in any case, and it is simply folly for the Lib-

; erals and Reformers to go on fighting each other when, so far as policy is concerned, there- is little or nothing be- . tween them. I cannot predict what | may happen when the House meets, whether in the near future or in June nertt. All I can say is that those who have worked with me in the past and who have had-the good fortune to be returned, will continue to do Their duty in any circumstances that may arise. i There are also several members who are pledged to oppose any combination of the Liberals an t Socialistic ir but I cannot say whether the bit: -

|of Parliament can be satisfactorily carried on under such conditions. It I may be necessary again to appeal to the country, but there are many forms and ceremonies to be gone through before that can take place. In the mean.time, We must patiently wait and see what the final figures reveal. Needless to say, I regret the disappearance from the new Parliament of the Speaker and the Chairman of Committees, Mr Malcolm, and others, who have done splendid work for the Dominion during the last few years. ’’■
