FINE IMPOSED AT GISBORNE. Two cases arising out of alleged false claims for enrolment as an elector were heard in the Magistrate’s Court at Gisborne on Monday. Caroline Fanny Poole was charged with making a false statement that she had resided for twelve months in New Zealand. William Joseph Robinson, who witnessed the claim, was charged with assisting in the commission of an offence. For the defence it was argued that .the alleged offence was not committed knowingly and wilfully. The defendant. an elderly lady, had landed in New Zealand on December 1 of last year and had supposed a year’-s residence would | entitle her to vote. The Magistrate said that the defend-! ant Poole had been warned by the can- ! ! vasser for the Licensed Victuallers that she should not be on the roll. Then the other' canvasser for the prohibition party came along and, though aware t that a doubt existed, she had allowed I herself to be convicted and had signed :an application. He could not treat the j matter lightly. Defendant would be . lined £5. | In Robinson’a case, his Worship said , defendant had been almost criminally negligent, but would be given the benefit of the doubt, and the ease would be dismissed.
