GIRL'S TERRIBLE DEATH

DRAGGED THROUGH SCRUB. Myrtle Cliummings, aged 10, daughter of a soldier’s widow, was dragged to death by a maddened pony recently at Redcliffs, Mildura (Melbourne). During the afternoon a woman saw a pony in the scrub, behaving" strangely, with something attached to a rope. She investigated, and found the pony, maddened and choking, with a halter, which had slipped over the cars and was tight -round its neck. At the other end of the rope was a girl’s bleeding body, with a rope round her neck.

A man named J.amont approached the pony, which galloped from tree to tree in the scrub. Finally the child’s body became fast with the rope around a stump, and t.amont, . succeeding in evading the kicks of. the crazy horse, released the body. Dr. Fenton pronounced life extinct.

At an inquiry the view was expressed that the usually quiet pouy had become frightened by the child stooping to pick up her shoes and stockings. After loading the horse Into the channel she must have placed the rope around her own neck, with the idea of having two hands free to put on her shoes. There were no witnesses of the actual happening.
