NO ASSISTANCE FOR COOP. COMPANIES.
A POSSIBLE EXCEPTION. The Prime Minister said in lire House of Representatives yesterday afternoon that statements had appeared in some of the mvspa-pers to the effect : that he had introduced or intended to introduce a Bill asking for authority to raise £1,500,000 for the purpose of assisting some co-operative institutions in New Zealand. No such Bill had appeared. Me had not introduced such a Bill or said that, it. was his intention 1o do so. How Ihe story had got about it was impossible for him l" say. He did not. know. Mi' \V. H. Field (Otaki): 1 heard il called “coddling the, cookies.” Mr T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South) Is there any provision to be put. in Ihe Finance Bill? Mr Massey: No. Mr C. E. .Statham (Dunedin Ccritral): Any guarantee?
Mr MnSsev: No. A member asked if the Prime Minister intended to extend the time for the repayment of deposits. Mr Massey: I think there is something in that idea. Bui 1 know there is some objection to it. I don’t want to extend the moratorium a minute longer than is absolutely necessary. It. is probable that owing to the recent increase iri the price of wool arid in ibc price of men! and in the outlook for the country generally, these concerns will be able to go on without assistance from the Government. There may be one exception. There is one concern that t think may require Government assistance. Something may t>e clone for it. but I am not certain about Hi at.. Those people interested in the export of pork will know what 1 mean.
