W, Harding (Waipukurau) presided, and other members present were: Messrs. J. L. Bruce (Agricultural Department), A. E. Anderson (Piriaka,, W. Leask (Waikatoi, W. .J. McCulloch (Central Development Farm), T. Beadel (Tai Tapu), G. W. Osborne (Canterbury), G. Maciarlane (Woodville), B. W. Harvey (Waverley), and N. Inder, secretary (Masterton). REPOBT AND BALANCE-SHEET.

The president stated in his annual report: Since the formation of the Association in June ,1921, i am pleased to suy that the breed lias received a good deal of additional recognition by the breeding public and the dairymen, due undoubtedly to the merits of the breed as a hardy and thrifty animal and a "heavy and persistent milk pru ducer; our cattle during the past -casein producing up to and over 5001 b ul butterlat days,, and milking foi ,us long as fourteen months in um lactation period. There is not a grea : deal ol prgress to report in Association matters up to the end ol our financial year, but since starling on our new year your Council decided to close the first volume of the herd book, and it is gratifying to note that we will have over 3DO entries—73 nudes ami iSi females. Also, since the beginning ol the current year seven new breeders have joined the Association, bringing our membership up to ii, and 12 prefixes have been registered. Your Council hope to have the herd book published by the end of the calendar

year. The report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a credit of £3 14/3. were I unanimously adopted, the chairman adding that, the Association was making headway and that the membership gave promise of growing during the coming year, whilst inquiries were being made as to the registration of further animals. ; NOTICES OF MOTION. ; A notice of motion by the chairman in the direction of encouraging the use of the higher classes of sires wa? adopted. A motion by Mr lnder specifying that, members whose subscription or fees were in arrears at any meeting would forfeit their right to fake part in the business of the meeting, was adopted. JUDGES AND INSPECTORS. j The chairman moved, in accordance with notice, that inspectors and jud-

ges be appointed, and that instructions j re type, etc., lor the said "inspectors ' and juuges oe compiled at this meeting- ' ine motion was carried, and the secretary suieu tiiah Messrs. Beadel, .vicCuiioen, Leask and Anderson had • peen appointed ofiicial judges, it was uecideu mat the name oi the chairman (Mr Harding) be added to the ■ judges. The question oi type was then gone into, a good deal oi discussion following on ihe application of the words •dual-purpose" to the Bed Poll breed.

Mr McCulloch opposed the use of the words, claiming that the ideal Poll cow was primarily a milk-producing animal and not dual-purpose. Mr Anderson said in that case they would lose the Hue characteristics oi ihe Poll, which were beef as well as milk. The breed had been established by ihe bringing together of two extremes, which had blended admirably and produced a well-balanced dualpurpose animal. Mr Maciarlane agreed with Mr McCulloch. It they were going lo consider type they most eliminate the dual-purpose animal, which wa* :ieiilier one or the other.

The meeting adopted this view, making the superior animal the one with the dairying characteristics the most strongly developed. Mr Osborne asked in the event of j an A. and P. Association deciding to put a Bed Poll class on its show schedule would it be necessary to secure the services of an official judge. The chairman said no, as that might be a big expense. In the case of small shows with small entries any cattle judge might be got to officiate. The official judges were appointed inspectors for the purpose ol inspecting entries of B, C. and D classes of I animals for insertion in Ihe herd book. 'i OFFICIALS FOB 1111'. YEAR.
