CHARGED WITH FALSE PRETENCES. ®ii six charges of obtaining by false pretences from a number of carriers, sums of money, ranging from gs to os (id, Colin Campbell Crump, 37 years of | age, appeared before iir F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. Chief Detective Kemp explained that the accused was a clerk by occupation, but at present was out of employment. His method of obtaining money consisted in approaching a carrier and asking him to remove certain materials, and then professing that he had forgotten his money, he usually requested a loan from the carrier. By this means, he had collected about ill. The chiel-de-tective concluded that the accused was of a respectable family, and he thought that the prosecution would be a lesson to him. There would be no difficulty in respect to restitution. Crump was accordingly convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, being warned. however, that if he appeared again, he would be sent to gaol for three mouths. —W »i. 'Mill
